Project Evaluation

At the start of the process, we all spoke about who’s script we wanted to use for our 2-minute film.  We all decided on Adam’s script out of convenience, and it was a very interesting and very well written script.  We had a meeting about the roles we would all be happy to do.  I was editor and general helper on the day, I also did some directing.  John was producer and did some directing on the day.  Adam was on sound, and Sam was on camera.  Once we had decided that we started on planning a day that worked for us all then we found some actors; Bella and Liv were the actors for our group.  We decided on the location being Adam’s house as we needed a house setting for the part of the script we had selected; his house was fitting for the script and was the most accessible for everyone to get there on the day.  I brought the equipment in my car and when we got there, we set up and got the exterior shots that we needed.  We then went inside and started to work through the script.  The issues we faced were the boom mic having to be held quite low.  We also found lighting was more difficult to control as different rooms naturally had different lighting already.  It took us a few takes for each scene.  We made sure to get coverage which was good.  I remembered to mention what had learnt from practicing coverage when we shot “The White Room”, that we needed transitional shots where people were walking to places or turning.  This would prevent any shots that jump too much where the actors seemingly “teleport” to places.  This also came in handy when editing and made it run smoother.  When it came to editing, I faced issues with having to cut things out of shot.  For example, in this shot you can see the boom mic in the top left.  I scaled the shot down slightly to cut the boom mic out.

I also had an issue with a person being in shot who shouldn’t have been.  I scaled down the shot to focus on Bella in this however this meant that part of the edit looks a bit more “jumpy” than the rest.

These were both things that taught me that when on camera you have a lot you need to make sure you are always looking out for.  Luckily this issue was an easy fix.

In future, I would like to be on camera a bit more to try that and practice with that much more.  I think it is very important that I do develop my skills in every area by practicing them all.  I have got much better at editing using premier pro and I have got much more comfortable.  In future I need to practice more with editing the shots themselves as I am happy with my skills in making a sequence.  I practiced much more this time in editing with putting sound with video.  I struggled at first with the best way to do it but after a few times I got the hang of it.  Luckily this time we made sure to make a point of using the clapper board which I would not have been able to put the sound and video together without.
