Script to Screen - Blog Post 3

Aesthetic research
After deciding on the script and reading it I instantly had an image in my head of it feeling very 60s/70s retro vibes. I wanted fleabag to be a very eccentric character which would be further emphasised by her sister (Claire’s) bland, neutral vibe. To further visualise this I made mood boards and sent them to the rest of the crew so they knew what my vision was and so we were all on the same page.
I presented this to the rest of the group in a PowerPoint presentation.

Young woman meets with her sister and discusses the issues in her life regarding love, work and family; all whilst breaking the fourth wall to share feelings with the audience.
Synopsis
This story takes place in a park and has flashbacks to Fleabag’s diner. The stakes are Fleabag gets money off her sister to help her out but the loss there is that she feels her sister will think she is a failure. The characters end up in conflict when Fleabag starts off on a bad foot by arriving nearly late. In the end, Fleabag gives up because of her fear of shame and doesn’t get any money from her sister as a loan.
Vision
The mood of this is going to be vibrant. I want a lot of movement with the camera to really build the tension between Claire and Fleabag in their conversation. I want the camera to feel closer to Fleabag than it does to Claire to really get that sense of how different and distant Claire and Fleabag are.
I have a vision of fleabag having very interesting quirks such as bright clothing whereas, Claire will have very plain clothing and will not stand out very much. This therefore emphasises the reasons they disagree. For example, Claire is organised and on-time and very serious. Whereas Fleabag is running in late and makes a joke of it.
Research
I have taken inspiration from Sex Education. It is a show that has done extremely well and has multiple series because of that. I really like the colourful, fun vibe of it and would like to incorporate it. I also find it interesting the way that serious topics are addressed in “Sex Education”, but in a comedic way often. I want to get a feeling of relatability over too by using the fourth wall breaks to make a connection with the audience.
